In general, however, it will not be possible to grow back all the hair that has been lost. Finasteride was originally developed to shrink enlarged prostates (in a drug called Proscar), but doctors noticed that it also grew hair. In the end the only thing remaining is a much smaller hair follicle with a thin stump of hair that doesn't even reach the scalp surface. In the Hair Count Clinical Study, hair counts showed an average gain of 277 hairs per one-inch circle at the end of five years. This is a generic drug that does exactly the same thing as Propecia and is significantly less expensive.
